ON TO LAKELAND - LADY VIKINGS ADVANCE PAST FSU ON CARSWELL'S LATE GAME FREE THROW



JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA -


The Lady Vikings defeated the Florida State University High Seminoles 56-55 on a free throw with .9 remaining in the game by Teyana Carswell to advance to Lakeland to play in the FHSAA 5A final four tournament. Carswell led the Vikings with 20pts 16rbs 2blks and 1 steal. The Vikings backcourt led by Nyla Allen, Ahliya Brown, and Selah Reddick played excellent scoring 20 of their combined 29pts in the 2nd half.


Seminoles' guard Tonie Morgan led all scorers with 21pts and sharp shooter Jordan Rosier logged 16pts. Rosier would help the Noles enjoy a 36-24 halftime lead as she led the way with 13pts on (3) 3s. Kyndall Thomas would land (2) 3s and Laniyah Gennie would bury 1 as the time expired to round off the Noles' 6 1st half 3 pointers. The Noles would end the contest with (8) total 3s.







The Vikings 2nd half defense back by a rowdy crowd would come to life as they stifled the Noles and contained Morgan, and Rosier to a combined 13pts. Allen, and Reddick would each log 3 steals for the game. Chazzmin Yoakley's 3 key blocks would help hold the Noles to just (10) 4th quarter points. Yoakley's defensive efforts played a huge roles in helping the Viks defeat the Noles.


To start the 4th quarter the Noles would be leading 45-41. Ahliya Brown would get Raines on the board 1st connecting on 2 free throws. Viks' Myleah Hampton would collect the Noles' ensuing missed shot attempt, and pass up court to Brown, Brown would mishandle the ball but would be able to retain possession and pass to Reddick who'd drive and dish to Carswell for the game tying lay up at 6:45.




Carswell would snag an offensive rebound away from Tonie Morgan and connect on a short jumper to give Raines their 1st lead of the game at 47-45 with 6:09 to play. The lead would be momentary as Laniyah Gennie nailed a 3 pointer to put the Noles back up 48-47. Morgan would put the Noles up 50-47 with just over 5 minutes to play after connecting on 2 free throws. On the Vikings' next two possessions, Reddick would drive and land a floater, and Yoakley would deflect a pass in the back court that Brown would recover and hit a layup to give the Viks the 51-50 lead with 4:32 to play.


The game would be once again be tied as Jordan Rosier landed 1/2 free throws. The Vikings would retake the lead on their next possession after Allen connected on a layup. On the Noles' ensuing possession, Kyndall Thomas would miss a 3 point attempt but would chase down the long rebound to give FSU another opportunity to retake the lead but Gennie would miss on a open 3pt attempt from in front of her bench. Rosier would come away with a huge steal and ultimately dish to Faith Thomas for the game tying layup with 2:12 to play. Morgan would give the Noles the lead again as she connected on a floater with 1:12 to play in the game. On the Viks' ensuing possession Nyla would connect on (2) free throws to re tie the game at 55 wit 42 seconds remaining.






The Noles would be fouled on their ensuing possession and would have to burn a time out after failing to inbound the ball. As the Refs signaled for the stop in play, Coach Paden was upset a he felt the call should have been a delay of game. Coming out of the timeout the Noles would commit a turnover after Rosier delivered an errand pass to Thomas. With 25.7 seconds remaining in regulation The Viks would elect to hold for the last shot. Coach Paden would call a timeout with 6.8 seconds remaining to draw up a play that could possibly send the Vikings to Lakeland.


The play would be simple, Nyla Allen would get the ball and drive to the basket for one of her patented floaters. Allen would miss on the attempt but Carswell would out muscle Thomas for her 16th rebound and would be fouled by DaDa Simmons as she attempted to lay in the miss. With .9 seconds Carswell would nail the 1st free throw to retake the lead. Carswell would miss the 2nd attempt and the Noles would gather the rebound but the horn would sound and pandemonium would erupt in Douglas White Gymnasium as the Vikings' fanatics stormed the court to celebrate the Lady Vikings 1st ever trip to Lakeland.
