Gamble Rogers Upsets Defending Runner Up Murray in Week 1 Opener The Gamble Rogers football team defeated cross town rival Murray, 14-10. The Stingrays have defeated Murray 4 times in the last 5 seasons. The Stingrays were led by WR/DB Frankie Morabito. The 2018 Top 100 player scored one receiving touchdown and had an interception on defense.

"It's a great win," said GRMS football coach Matt Potak. "I'm proud of the way our kids responded to adversity." The Stingrays took an early 7-0 halftime lead when Cason Blanco connected with Morabito on a 25 yard score. Morabito kicked the extra point. However, the defending 2018 SJMSAA runner up Murray was able to rally in the third quarter and take a 10-7 lead going into late in the fourth quarter. Murray converted on a long pass play and forced a safety on the ensuing possession. Trailing 10-7, the Stingrays successfully recovered a Morabito inside kick when Devin Blocker jumped on the lose ball.

"That inside kick recovery was huge, " said Potak. "Coach Ron Evans told Frankie to onside it to try and make something happen, it paid off big time." The Stingrays went down the on a nine play drive led by Running backs Zander Martin and Julian Quintero. Facing a third down, Blanco completed a 23 yard pass to Jason Watson, which setup a short touchdown run from Quintero.

"Our offensive coordinator (Mike Babinue) had a great plan going into that last drive," said Potak. The entire offensive coaching staff did a great job keeping everyone focused." Defensively the Stingrays held Murray to under 100 yards of total offense. Longtime Stingray Defensive Coordinator Ron Evans sent pressure on Murray the entire night. Linebackers Kani Harris and Julian Davila led the charge. "Defense was strong.," said Potak. "The guys flew around and made plays."
