SJMSAA WEEK1 Gamble Rogers continues win streak, LPA Wolves, and Valley Ridge Hawks both great wins.

St.Johns County-

Week 1 in St.Johns County middle school action kicked off with some great football. You had some surprise wins, an upset, a new program taking the field and a couple teams handling business as usual in Landrum and Gamble Rogers.

The defending 2019 Champs Gamble Rogers StingRays shut out the visiting Fruit Cove Flyers 20-0 to continue their win streak to 12-0.

With the help of their offensive line, Ray's punishing runner Joseph Soto found the end zone twice, and QB Brooks Cornelison would throw a TD strike to WR Trenton Carter to help Gamble get the win. The Stingrays will travel to Pacetti Bay next Wednesday

The Valley Ridge Hawks earned just their 2nd win in a long six years over first year program Freedom Crossing Falcons by a score of 20-6. The Hawks QB Locklan Hewlett looks like the real deal as he threw stikes, and darts all game long to help keep his team with the lead. Hewlett ended the contest with 2TD passes.

Hawks' big man Payton Mooningham controlled the line of scrimmage and made several key tackles and sacks. DB Maddox Spencer controlled the airways and out battled a WR for an interception late in the game to end a promising Falcons' drive.

The Liberty Pines Wolves defeated the Patriot Oaks Chargers 14-0. The Wolves are very talented and controlled the majority of the game. In the 1st frame QB Jaiden Weatherly would scramble past several defenders and launched a pass to Ath Nico Weiss who out muscled a defender for the ball while another DB made an attempt to bat the pass away.

The crowd would go crazy over the Raiders' first TD of the season but a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct would negate the play. The Wolves would put together a promising drive mid 2nd quarter

after a long punt return by Weiss, but lightning strikes would cause the drive, and game to be temporarily stopped for 35 minutes.

When play resumed Ath Marco Lonza would take a handoff to just short of the goal line. The Chargers' hitman Colyn Mohler would make a huge tackle in the backfield to hold off the Wolves on 4th down to keep the game scoreless. QB Sean Ashenfelder would lead the Chargers down field but POA would have to settle for a 25yd FG attempt. The Wolves would block the field goal and Nico Weiss would scoop up the loose ball and sprint to the end zone. Marco Lonza would get freaky on the 2pt conversion as he laid out backwards to haul in the pass from Jaiden Weatherly.

Drew Watson would give the Wolves the insurmountable 14-0 lead as he barrelled through a defender to cross the goal line. DE Ayden Rivera had a monster game and was virtually unlockable and made a living in the Chargers back field all game long.

The Landrum Lions took care of business beating the Swiss Point Raiders 36-6.

Lions RB Emmit Grzebin would plow through the Raiders defense early for 2 TDs and help Landrum jump out in front to a 14-0 2nd quarter lead. Raiders QB Harrison Miller would get his team on the board just before halftime with a TD pass. RB CJ Brown would would help the Raiders pull within a six as barrelled through a defender at the goalline. The score would be 22-16 at the end of the 3rd frame.

Mason Hauffman would return the favor on the Lions' ensuing drive as he barrelled through 2 defenders just before crossing the goalline to help push the lead to 30-16. Lions DB Jake Ottenson would jump a route to get his 1st interception of the 2020 season and Haufman would cash in on it with a short TD run. The Lions will host Pacetti Bay next Wednesday.

The surprise win of the day was the Pacetti Bay Wildcats shocking upset 24-20 victory over powerhouse Murray Bulldogs who finished as the county's 2019 runner up. The Bulldogs will travel to Plantation Park on Wednesday to face Swiss Point at 5pm.
