STINGRAYS EARN VICTORY

Updated: Aug 24, 2018

St. Johns County-

2017 ST. Johns 2017 middle school champion, Gamble Rogers Stingrays

took on the LPA Wolves to open the 2K18 season. After a 35-0 win over the Swiss Point Raiders in preseason action Head Coach Matt Potak would have his team ready to play and defend their title. Losing athletes King Benford, and Aaron Wynn would be no easy task for coach Potak to replace as both guys are starting as freshmen for the 5A Menendez Falcons. To replace the production of Benford, and Wynn Potak will lean heavily on dual threat qb and safety Noah Lawless, bruising runner Zander Martin and athlete Thomas jones.

In front of a packed Creeks football stadium, and sidelines crowed with fans on both sides loudly cheering on their respective teams, Lawless wouldn't disappoint the Stingray fanatics. Midway through the 1st quarter, on 4th and 11 Noah would bootleg around the left side for a 40yd td run. The crowd would go crazy as Noah completed the 2pt pass to #1 Thomas Jones. Jones and Lawless would help the Rays defense hold the Wolves scoreless for the 1st half.

On the 1st play of the 3rd quarter Noah would shock the crowd by once again breaking loose on the Wolves defense zig zagging and rumbling his way to a 56yd td. Jones would take a handoff from Noah and convert the 2pt try, and take a 16-0 early 3rd quarter lead. All the momentum would be in favor of the Rays and their fans were going crazy as the Wolves fans stood silence.

Needing to put points on the board to keep the game in check, Wolves qb Riley Trujillo would show off the strong arm churning out a couple 1st down passes before hitting wr #31 Jack Cremen on a 50yd catch and run down to the 1yd line. The Rays defense would rise up once again 2 plays later forcing and recovering a fumble to halt a promising Wolves drive. The Rays offense would sputter out in the 2nd half after the initial opening 2nd half td run by Noah Lawless, but their defense would gain stand tall turning away Trujillo on 2 more promising late game drives. The big man Jake Orr made several key tackles to help the Rays preserve the shut out and db Frankie Morabito had a great match up all night on the outside battling with Jack Cremen. Although Cremen beat him on the deep one, Morabito batted down key balls late in the game, and nearly came away with an int. The rays would get 1 step closer in defending their crown as they took the victory 16-0 over the LPA Wolves. Rays travel to take on rival Sebastian next week.
