St. Johns Co.-

In Wednesday action the 3-0 Swiss Point Raiders took on the 0-3 Valley Ridge Hawks. The Raiders would come into the game the heavy favorite and may have overlooking the Hawks for their showdown next week with the 3-0 Murry Bulldogs, a game that will have major playoff implications.

Outside of a Taylor Rhodes int, the 1st half was virtually a dud as penalties, mistakes, and blown opportunities plagued both teams. The score would remain 0-0 at halftime.

More of the same would ensue for both teams. Raiders QB Taylor Rhodes would put together a solid drive in the 3rd quarter but Swiss would ultimately fumble it away at the 7yd line. That fumble was recovered by Hawks Ethan Miller. Ath Alex Weemoff and Samuel Milton would provide a few sparks for the Hawks but they wouldn't be able to cash in on anything due to more penalties, and mistakes none more critical than squandering away a great redzone opportunity after Samuel to a hand off from the Hawks 10yd and raced 70yds to the 20 after that fumble recovery. The Hawks drive would stall out after nearly fumbling the ball away.

Fast forward to just over 1 minute to play with the score 0-0, the Raiders would line up to punt from the shadow of their own goal line. Ath Camryn Smith would step up to make the biggest play for the Hawks to that point by blocking the punt and recovering it in the endzone for a 7-0 lead after the made fg attempt. The Hawks side of the field erupted in joy as they were eyeing their 1st victory of the year. The Raiders would move the ball to just around the 40 when Hawks DB Brian Ruppel would blitz in the sack Rhodes who was zig zagging around looking for open WRs.Rhodes would step to the plate 2 plays later and deliver a 25yd strike to Fred Bender to the Hawks 35. Rhodes would try and hit Bender again on a pass to the endzone as time was running down. Seemingly what would be the biggest play of the game for the Hawks turned out to be 1 of the biggest plays for the Raiders. The pass to Bender was intercepted at the 9yd line by Alex Weemoff who fumbled it away as he turned around to return it,the fumble was recovered by Jesse Murrell at the 15 giving the Raiders a 1st down and enough time to run a couple plays. After getting the ball to the 5yd line Taylor Rhodes would take a shot gun snap and wiggle his way past some defenders and broke the would be game winning tackle of Carson Cinto to score a td as time expired and the horn sounded. The score would be 7-6 Hawks lead with the extra point try coming up. The former 2016 SJMAA Champs would show the Hawks just what their made of by going for the victory. Rhodes would handoff to Jacob August who would barrel it in for the 2pt score and the 8-7 win. August would display the pains of victory and shed tears of joy with his team mates as he took that handoff with a broken hand. The Hawks left feeling the pain of defeat once again as they fell to 0-3. The Raiders Conner Hemmingway, Ayden Griffin, and Arion Stith played huge in their win giving up hardly nothing all game. Another huge performance from them will be needed as Murry is known to light it up.
